Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance therapy is critically important if you have been previously treated for periodontal disease (gum disease) or you are at risk for developing periodontal disease. Periodontal maintenance is an ongoing treatment that helps prevent gum disease from affecting your gum tissue and bone. Regular check-ups and periodontal maintenance ensure a healthier mouth and can prevent the need for more expensive and invasive procedures.

Why is Periodontal Maintenance Necessary?

The bacteria in plaque are the main cause of gum disease. The bacteria produce toxins that eat away at your gum, teeth and bone. The plaque, if left untreated, will turn into calculus and further inflame your gums.

Even with perfect oral hygiene, you will develop some calculus. Flossing and brushing will slow down the accumulation of calculus but you need regular periodontal maintenance from a dental hygienist to remove all the calculus and limit the growth of toxic bacteria. Regular periodontal maintenance will also give the hygienist a chance to identify and treat any hidden periodontal issues before they lead to larger problems.

How Often Do I Need a Periodontal Maintenance Visit?

Every patient is unique so the time between visits varies. At Associates of Dental Arts we work with you to create the treatment plan that best meets your needs. While many things can affect how often you need to be seen (such as what type of periodontal disease you have and the severity of the disease) but the most importance element is your dedication to good oral hygiene.
