What is the difference between periodontal disease and gum disease?

We define periodontal disease as a form of advanced gum disease. If you ignore the early signs of gum disease, such as bad breath or swollen gums, the disease may progress into the advanced stages where hardened tartar around the tooth creates a breeding ground for bacteria and infection. This type of buildup will require special instruments to remove it completely and a laser to eradicate the infection.
